Hempstead supervisor helps secure boats ahead of storm

Hempstead Town Supervisor Don Clavin and Councilman Anthony D’Esposito stopped off at the town’s marinas Sunday to inspect efforts to secure boats ahead of Monday’s nor’easter, which was expected to drop up to a foot of snow across the region and bring with it strong winds and a higher-than-normal tide.

“Hempstead Town’s motto when preparing for hazardous weather is ‘always expect the worst.’ This winter storm will create dangerous travel conditions and may result in coastal flooding and subsequent freezing,” Clavin said. “Safety is our top priority, and we will do everything we can to effectively respond to this winter storm in order to keep our residents safe.”

While warning of the dangers of the upcoming winter storm, the officials also detailed the nautical preparations performed by town Department of Conservation and Waterways workers. Since some boat owners leave their vessels in the water throughout the winter, known as a “wet store,” the town must ensure the boats are secure.

“Potential coastal flooding is a serious concern for all our neighbors close to the seaside, many of them residing in my councilmanic district,” D’Esposito said. “It pays to be prepared, and everyone should take all necessary precautions to endure this winter storm safely.”

First, the marina employees check mooring lines to ensure they are secure. They then add additional lines to keep the boats tied down. After checking the recreational boats, the crews secure the barges and cranes used by the department, adding extra lines when needed. The marina crew then fortifies the chains connected to the pilings, rechaining when needed, to make sure the floats and docks do not float out to sea.

After securing all vessels, the staff reaches out to boat owners, informing them of the upcoming weather and inviting them to check on their vessels. When checking on their docked boats, owners should be aware of the following precautions:

Plug your exhaust ports; if snow piles up on the stern, exhaust ports could get pushed below the surface.

Inspect your shore power cord and dock pedestal for any signs of corrosion or overheating.

Make sure your fresh water system is drained as it may freeze up, causing extensive damage.

Ensure all batteries are fully charged and test the bilge pumps.

Remember to use non-toxic anti-freeze to flush the holding tank.

Use chafe guards on lines to protect them from wearing away.

Town bay constables will monitor sea activity before, during and after the winter storm, Clavin said. The constables will patrol the waters when safe and will be on call for emergency rescues on the waterways. Additionally, they will patrol the docked boats at the marinas, securing their equipment as well.
