The Town of Hempstead sanitation department held the year's first Stop Throwing Out Pollutants collection day on Saturday, March 20 in Eisenhower Park in East Meadow.
The event is part of a series of events the S.T.O.P. Program holds to provide area residents with a safe and environmentally sound method of disposing of hazardous materials found in the average home.
According to the Department of Sanitation, by bringing to collection days toxins like antifreeze, drain cleaners and pesticides, residents can significant contribute to the protection of the town's groundwater supply and the preservation of local bays and estuaries.
The next collection day will be Sunday, April 18, in the Long Beach City Hall parking lot. For a list of 2010 collection days and locations, and for more information about the S.T.O.P. Program, click here.
