More than 40 people crowded into the Elmont Public Library meeting room for the first organizational meeting of the seventh annual Summer 3-on-3 Basketball tournament held at Dutch Broadway School.
The tournament is a huge summer attraction, attended by people from various communities, including West Hempstead. It is a community-created initiative that is run by volunteers and dedicated young people, according to its chairman, Scott Cushing.
Cushing convened the first of several community outreach sessions with volunteers in order to organize what has become one of the largest outdoor summer sporting events in western Nassau County. Last year, more than 2,300 children participated in the event, so Cushing and the committee decided it was essential to discuss the layout of the grounds, and the division of times and events.
It was announced tournament, which will be held July 9, is being played in memory of David Dangerfield, who, according to Cushing, was an active community member in youth athletic leagues and the PTA. Dangerfield also worked for the FDNY.
