This year, eight freshman and sophomores at West Hempstead High School participated in the 2010 Molloy College Science Fair, which was held on March 19.
Two of the eight were selected as top 20 finalists, beating hundreds of other students from throughout Nassau County for the title.
Chris McAvoy and Steven Trezza presented their projects before a number of judges whose task it is to determine the merit of each individual project.
McAvoy’s project, "Biometric Wind Turbine Blade Design Efficiency," won him first place and the gold award, which was presented to him on April 24 at a winner’s ceremony.
Trezza won fifth place for his project, "Can We Clean it and Green it?"
The pair were two of 170 Nassau County 9th- and 10th-grade students given the opportunity to present their projects at the annual science fair, which Molloy College started in order to support and encourage the advancement of science and technology.
