A West Hempstead man was arrested on Monday afternoon after police said he was driving on the Southern State Parkway while in possession of marijuana.

State police said that at 3:25 p.m., a state trooper stopped a gray Toyota Corolla for moving out of its lane several times as it traveled east on the Southern State Parkway west of Fletcher Avenue.

The 23-year-old driver had been driving while on his cell phone, police said. While interviewing the driver, the trooper detected a strong odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle. A search of the vehicle revealed that the driver was in possession of four grams of marijuana in a zip lock bag, along with marijuana paraphernalia and three hydrocodone pills.

The driver was charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of marijuana, controlled substance in non-original container, and traffic violations.
