Bob Sheppard, known as “the Voice of the Yankees” — and dubbed “the Voice of God” by former Yankees great Reggie Jackson — was laid to rest on July 15 at St. Christopher’s Church in his hometown of Baldwin. Sheppard died on July 11 at age 99.

When the Herald put out the call for Person of the Year suggestions, Dr. Eric Shoenfeld’s was a name we saw a lot. “He’s everyone’s doctor,” one nominator enthused. “He’s everyone’s father’s doctor, too.”
So, as we always do on matters relating to Baldwin, we consulted Michele Snow, a 36-year Baldwin resident who answers the phones at the Herald offices. Did she know Dr. Shoenfeld?
“Yes,” Snow said. “He’s my doctor. He’s my father’s doctor, too.”

In a departure from plans made by the previous administration, Nassau County lawmakers have agreed to purchase property on Harrison Avenue and Merrick Road for the construction of a new 1st Precinct police station. The acquisition of the parcel — which is across Harrison Avenue from the existing station — puts to rest an earlier idea to lease space in the Rosen Shopping Center on Grand Avenue.

For far too many of us, the holidays are a time of excess. We spend too much money, we drink too much eggnog and, of course, we eat too much. While an occasional overindulgence — an extra helping of Aunt Deirdre’s pumpkin pie, for instance — probably won’t do you any lasting harm, a pattern of poor holiday eating can have a cumulatively deleterious effect.
