A group of technically talented teens put their gadget mastery to good use at the Baldwin Public Library on March 2, tutoring a gathering of seniors on the proper use of their gizmos and gear. A half dozen young people between ages 11 and 17 showed up early to enjoy pizza in the community room before their more mature clients began peppering them with questions. more
Training began on Sunday for a group of dedicated fundraisers who are running for a cause. Among the jogging shoe-clad athletes who met up at field four in Eisenhower Park to begin training were Dan Scheinman and his daughter, Julia, a junior at Baldwin High School. The father/daughter jogging team will be tackling a half marathon in order to raise funds for a third member of their family — Dan Scheinman, of Baldwin Middle School — who has been living with Crohn’s Disease for the last two years. The eager and dedicated program participants listened to a motivational speech from their coach, then took to the first steps on what promises to be an arduous, but rewarding journey. It’s happening again, and the timing couldn’t be worse. State funds earmarked for Nassau County substance abuse programs are being held up and the agencies awaiting them are fending off crises at an unprecedented rate. Battling stoically against an ongoing heroine epidemic as well as a shameful spate of drunk driving fiascoes, neighborhood drug counseling agencies in Baldwin, Rockville Centre, Franklin Square and other areas are still awaiting a “January advance” they say the county has received but has yet to distribute. more
