Two Calhoun High School seniors –– Asia Brown and Tiffany Minors –– have been named Outstanding Participants in the 2012 National Achievement Scholarship Program. The distinction is awarded annually to the top 3 percent of more than 160,000 African-American students based on their scores on the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test, taken in 10th grade. The students are referred to more than 1,500 colleges as recipients of this award. more
The Calhoun High School baseball team advanced to the Conference AA-III semifinals on May 19, after defeating Syosset, 4-0, concluding a two-game sweep after the Colts previously took the opening game of the series, 15-0, on May 16. more

Kennedy High School senior Max Krackow was recently named a semifinalist in the prestigious Coca-Cola Scholars program. Krackow was one of 2,100 semifinalists selected from a pool of 71,000 students. more

By the time Carly Thea was 9 years old, the now Kennedy High School senior knew that softball was the sport for her, and over the years her commitment to the game has grown. On Wednesday, Nov. 10, the Merrick native signed a letter of intent to continue playing the game that she loves at the University of Pittsburgh. She received a full athletic scholarship to the school. more
Merrick American Legion Post 1282 will award a $1,000 Philip L. Williams Memorial Scholarship to a deserving high school senior who best exemplifies Williams’s qualities and core values, including patriotism, family, community and a strong work ethic. Williams died last year of cancer. more
