The financial challenges faced by safety net hospitals are of national concern. This is particularly true as Medicaid reimbursement rates and state aid for hospitals that serve diverse patient populations continue to fall short of what is needed.

Class will be in session for students in every school district in the Bellmores on days that were originally slated for February break, officials said.
Administrators in the Bellmore, North Bellmore and Bellmore-Merrick Central High School districts have all approved changes to their schools’ calendars, which were devised to make up instructional days lost in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. In each of the three districts, Feb. 20, 21 and 22 were officially made school days for students, in addition Feb. 19 in North Bellmore and other adjustments in each district.

We are living in the midst of a climate emergency, with the expectation that conditions will significantly worsen in the near future. In January, NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration confirmed that 2023 was the hottest year ever recorded. In New York state, climate change is impacting the environment, society and the economy as extreme weather events increase in frequency and intensity. Floods are more frequent, and the growing season for crops is changing. Climate disasters have cost the northeastern United States over $80 billion since 1980.
