Lynbrook High School students Toniann Butler and Chelsea Carver both qualified to perform in the 2010 New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) All-State Winter Conference. This is the second consecutive year that Chelsea was chosen for this honor. She will be singing in the All-State Mixed Chorus. Toniann was chosen for the Women’s Chorus. They will be attending the annual All-State Conference on December 2-5, 2010, where they will have the distinction of performing at the renowned Eastman Theater. more
Story time and scarecrow making kicked off the autumn season at the East Rockaway Public Library on Sept. 25. Children talked about their favorite desserts and discussed how they help around the house and greeted guests to prepare for Thanksgiving. Mary Ann Catanzaro read “Thanksgiving Rules” by Laurie Friedman. The face painting by Donna was also a hit. more
Hundreds of friends and family attended the Timothy J. Motherway Memorial Scholarship Fundraiser held last Saturday at the Commuters Club on Ocean Avenue in East Rockaway. The funds raised at this second annual event will go to a graduating student at East Rockaway High School — Motherway’s alma mater. more
East Rockaway rebounded from its first loss of the season with a convincing 40-27 victory over Clarke on Homecoming Day at Clarke High School last Saturday. Senior Michael Castellano rushed for a career-high 241 yards on 27 carries and scored two touchdowns to lead the Rocks. more

The Village of East Rockaway’s Recreation Department, the East Rockaway Chamber of Commerce and its sponsors, will hold the Fourth Annual Oktoberfest Festival Columbus Day weekend. This year’s festival will be a three-day event taking place Fri., Oct. 8 through Sun., Oct. 10 at the East Rockaway waterfront. more
To commemorate the International Day of Peace, students at Lynbrook’s Waverly Park School participated in an act of art activism called Pinwheels for Peace. Every student in the school created a pinwheel, decorated with their own personal message of peace. The entire student body, who gathered around the peace pole outside of their school, placed the pinwheels around the perimeter of the lawn to create a visual statement of their commitment to the ideals of peace. more
Thomas Crotty stood and stared for a moment on Friday at the twisted, rusted, 1,600-pound steel girder in front of the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s Brookside School in North Merrick. “It was very thoughtful of the community and the young people to do this so the day and the people will not be forgotten,” Crotty remarked. more
