To commemorate the International Day of Peace, students at Lynbrook’s Waverly Park School participated in an act of art activism called Pinwheels for Peace. Every student in the school created a pinwheel, decorated with their own personal message of peace. The entire student body, who gathered around the peace pole outside of their school, placed the pinwheels around the perimeter of the lawn to create a visual statement of their commitment to the ideals of peace. more
Members with the Wounded Warrior Project held their annual picnic in Eisenhower Park on Sept. 21. A local ambassador for the organization, Paul Hastings, accepted a $15,000 donation from the Nassau County Police Benevolent Association. “It was an awesome turnout,” said Hastings, “and it was a more than generous donation from the PBA.” more

Sept 4: Fears of extensive flooding, power outages and property damage fizzled on Friday as Hurricane Earl passed far enough out to sea that Nassau County suffered little more than scattered beach flooding. Even Jones Beach State Park, where extensive flooding was reported, had some areas open for swimming today and the Stone Temple Pilots concert planned for tonight at the Nikon at Jones Beach Theater will take place as scheduled. more
