Glen Cove’s downtown has thriving businesses, lush greenery, and string lights that blanket evening shoppers in a soft, warm glow. Although the ambiance, the diverse businesses and the Downtown Sounds summer concert series already attract visitors from other parts of the North Shore, the city is asking community members what improvements they’d like to see in the downtown area.

The Glen Cove City Council unanimously passed a new law on July 25 that restricts the establishment of tobacco stores, commonly known as vape shops, in certain areas in the city, which, council members said, will help reduce young people’s access to tobacco, vaping and drug paraphernalia.

County Executive Bruce Blakeman says he has subpoenaed Hofstra president Susan Poser, accusing her of colluding with a competing casino organization in an effort to derail plans by Las Vegas Sands to redevelop the Nassau Coliseum.

Glen Cove residents Tony Lagos, owner of Burger Boys Bar and Grill, and longtime friend Kevin Losee were sitting outside the restaurant on Aug. 31 enjoying a warm evening summer breeze. Typically, the street is silent during evening hours, but the quiet was shattered by broken glass and desperate cries for help just before 11p.m. Lagos and Losse sprang from their seats realizing they had to answer the urgent pleas.
