As I glided in a yellow kayak across Middle Bay near Island Park on a recent Wednesday, I couldn’t help but think this was a perfect October morning to be on the water. The sun was still rising, but shining brightly — perhaps a little too brightly. I really wish I had brought sunglasses, I thought. It was rookie mistake, and I wasn’t even a first-time kayaker.

Things got off to an inauspicious start for the Pride. First, coach Mo Cassara was forced to suspend Connecticut transfer Jamal Coombs-McDaniel and Penn State transfer Taran Buie for the opening two games for violating team rules. Then last week, Shaquille Stokes, Jimmy Hall, Dallas Anglin, and Kentrell Washington were arrested for allegedly stealing laptop computers, iPads and other items from dorm rooms. The university suspended the four players for the team and from attending classes. Stokes and Hall were both starters.
