Nassau County football: Week 2

Posted

Nassau's Week 2 football slate kicks off Friday with five contests, including Conference III No. 1 seed Lawrence hosting Bethpage at 7 p.m. Both teams are coming off blowout victories. The Golden Tornadoes cruised past Manhasset, 35-0, behind four Ryan Fredericks touchdowns, while the Golden Eagles routed Roslyn, 44-14.

One of the bigger games on Saturday's schedule features defending Long Island Class III champion Lynbrook hitting the road to meet Plainedge at 1:30 p.m. The Owls, 38-20 winners over Glen Cove in Week 1, will try to contain Red Devils running back Ralph Caccavale, who had 150 yards and three scores in a 42-14 win over Sewanhaka. Also in Conference III, Hewlett (1-0) travels to South Side (0-1), and Valley Stream South (1-0) goes to Sewanhaka.

Two interesting games highlight the Conference IV action. East Rockaway (1-0) is home against Roosevelt (1-0), while newcomer West Hempstead (1-0) looks to give defending champion Seaford (1-0) a run for its money in a 5 p.m. start. Clarke visits Valley Stream North.

In Conference I, Valley Stream Central (1-0) comes off a 48-point outburst against Port Washington but has a much tougher assignment on Saturday when Massapequa (0-1) steps on Firemen's Field. The Chiefs lost to East Meadow (1-0), which visits Farmingdale (0-1) for a noon start. Baldwin, a 20-19 winner over the Dalers on Pat Dillon's touchdown with two minutes remaining, opens at home against Hempstead.

The key showdowns in Conference II has top-seeded Carey hosting Mepham, and defending champion Garden City hosting Wantagh. All four teams captured their openers, including all but Carey in shutout fashion.
