Nassau County football: Week 3

Posted

Some heated rivalries will be renewed this weekend on the Nassau gridiron, including Freeport-Oceanside in Conference I, Carey-Elmont in Conference II, and Lawrence-Hewlett in Conference III.

Freeport is the lone No. 1 seed in the county to start 2-0. Carey, Lawrence, and Seaford all suffered upset losses at home against No. 5 seeds (Mepham, Bethpage, and West Hempstead, respectively) last Saturday and will try to rebound against tough opponents.

Carey makes the short drive up Hempstead Turnpike on Saturday to face Elmont (2-0), which had Will Faison debut at quarterback last week and lead a 45-0 rout at Herricks with three passing scores including two to Kyle Johnson. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. At the same time, Lawrence visits Hewlett (2-0) in what promises to be an exciting matchup. The Bulldogs beat the Golden Tornadoes during the regular season in 2010, but the playoffs were a different story. Seaford, which saw its 44-game winning streak against Nassau opponents ended by the upstart Rams, head to Locust Valley.

Friday night's action features Freeport visiting Oceanside for a 7 p.m. start. Both teams are 2-0. In Conference II, Long Beach is home to Kennedy at L.B. Middle School at 7:30 p.m. A year ago, the Marines beat the Cougars in a high-scoring affair under the lights.

Other key matchups on Saturday has Baldwin (2-0) visiting Massapequa in Conference I, and West Hempstead (2-0) hosting Cold Spring Harbor in Conference IV.
