Noah Burroughs garners more votes for 18th assembly district Democratic primary

Noah Burroughs ended Tuesday night with a total of 2,727 votes to opponent Lisa Ortiz’s 2,556 votes for the 18th District State Assembly Primary election with 51% of all votes reported going to Burroughs.

Burroughs, a Hempstead village trustee, elected to run for the Democratic nomination to succeed Assemblywoman Taylor Darling when he found out that the latter was running for state senate.

Burroughs’ commitment to community service was inspired in large part by his father’s involvement in the Civil Rights Movement.

Burroughs played for the New York Jets from 2000 to 2003 and later coached football at Hempstead High School and Nassau Community College.

A Nassau County Community College and University of Buffalo graduate, Burroughs has spent the last 20 years teaching history in Hempstead schools.

He also founded the Time Foundation to give back to the community through book bag drives and sports camps.

“I want to continue to grow … and try and help more people in my community. What way to do that better (than) on the state Assembly?” said Burroughs in a recent Herald roundtable.

Elected as a village trustee in 2021, Burroughs aims to address infrastructure issues, improve sewer and water systems, and revitalize business areas in Uniondale and Roosevelt.

He believes that serving in the state Assembly will allow him to continue helping his community on a larger scale.

"Today’s victory is not one just for me but for the entire 18th Assembly District," said Burroughs about the primary results.

"I am ready to roll up my sleeves on day one to work with my colleagues, elected officials and most importantly, the community. My goal remains the same and that is to bring my district all that they deserve."

Results are unofficial until certified by the Nassau County Board of Elections.
