Baldwin teen Peyton Mahler is Scouts BSA Troop 182’s newest Eagle Scout.
He was joined by fellow scouts, local elected officials and his parents, Erik and Tracy, at First Church Baldwin United Methodist on Jan. 26 for the pinning ceremony.
Mahler’s project entailed ripping down the entire roof of the Baldwin Historical Society building, 1980 Grand Ave., and installing brand new roofing. He worked with Topline New York Contractor to oversee the removal of the rotting original cedar shake siding and replace it with new siding.
He also had dead trees and garbage removed from the property, trimmed the existing trees and painted the front porch area and chimney. All together it cost about $25,000 to $30,000.
Between 30 and 40 volunteers turned out for the project, which took two weekends to complete. Mahler fundraised for the project and donated the leftover money to the Baldwin Historical Society.
At the ceremony, Doris Lister and Gary Farkash of the Historical Society accepted the funds and thanked Mahler.
It was a legacy project for Mahler, too, with a special family connection. His grandfather raised funds back in the 1970s to build the original building.
