Doo-wop charity concert

The Nassau South Shore Chapter of the Long Island Board of Realtors invites you to the 2nd annual Doo-Wop Sock Hop charity event at the Sands at Lido, at 710 Lido Blvd. in Lido Beach on Oct. 16. LBMC autumn ball
The Long Beach Medical Center will host its 87th annual autumn ball on Oct. 17 at The Sands, at 1395 Beech St. in Atlantic Beach, starting at 7 p.m. The ball is LBMC’s major fundraising event and offers an elegant evening of cocktails, dinner and dancing. Cub Scout Red Ribbon event
All boys and girls are welcome to the Long Beach Cub Scouts Pack 51 to learn some old fashion street games and to help celebrate red ribbon drug awareness week on Oct. 18 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Long Beach Middle School gym. For information call Lee Cornell at 567-6725.


Luncheon meeting
Speaker Bernie Rader, a former prisoner of war, will be the keynote speaker at a luncheon meeting at the Community Center, at 650 Magnolia Blvd., at 1 p.m. on Oct. 22. For reservations call 432-6034.


Take a walk on the civic side
The Walks Association, a civic group of the Walks neighborhood in Long Beach, will hold a regular meeting at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 22 at the Cass Center at St. Ignatius Church, at 721 W. Broadway. The guest speakers will be the three Democratic candidates for City Council. Also, visit the civic group’s new Web site at www.thewalksassoc.blogspot.com.


Photos needed for city calendar
The City of Long Beach is looking for photography enthusiasts to submit horizontal photos of the the ocean, bay, beachfront, streets, summer, winter, spring and fall for its 2010 calendar. The submissions deadline is Oct. 22. Photos should be high resolution JPEGs or PNGs and sent to info@longbeachny.org. Photos can also be dropped off or mailed to the public relations office at Long Beach City Hall, at 1 W. Chester St., Room 502, by 4 p.m. on Oct. 22.  


Beach clean up
The Long Beach High School Surf Club will hold their 4th annual community beach clean up on Oct. 24, starting at 12 p.m. at National Boulevard. The rain date is Oct. 25.

Catholic school crystal ball
The Long Beach Catholic Regional School will hold its annual Crystal Ball at 7 p.m. on Oct. 24 at The Sands at Atlantic Beach.  The honorees for this year’s event are Dr. Bennett Gallinaro and The Merola Family. Tickets and commemorative journal ads can be purchased by contacting JoAnn Joyce 897-3035.


Religious art wanted
The People’s Church of Long Beach, at 111 Delaware Ave., is holding its fourth annual Bible Art Summit at 1 to 6 p.m. on Oct. 24. Any artist wishing to enter must bring their art between 6 and 8 p.m. on Oct. 23. Art must be based on the Hebrew or Christian scriptures and accompanied by a written paragraph of the story and the book in the Bible it represents. No nudes allowed. For information call 431-3968.


Architecture exhibit
The Long Beach Island Landmarks Association will host a week-long exhibition "Architectural Styles of Long Beach" at Ever's Place art gallery, at 949 West Beech Street in Long Beach, from Oct. 25 to Nov. 1. Israeli pianist Einav Yarden’s program will interweave works by Bethoven and Israeli composers at 2 p.m. on Oct. 17.

Latin dance steps for fitness
Seniors can get in shape and have fun with a workout using Latin dance steps, such as the Merengue, Cha Cha and Salsa, with instructor Lisa Wisel on Oct. 22 at 9 a.m.


Music that makes you move
Movement to music is an enjoyable way to exercise and feel better. This action-oriented program, led by instructor Lisa Wisel, is suitable for all seniors. Class sessions are scheduled for Wednesdays at 1 p.m.


Meditation classes
Lisa Wisel will teach techniques that facilitate renewed energy by focusing on the breath and body sensation on Oct. 14, Nov. 11 and Dec. 9 at 2:15 p.m. Participants begin with easy stretches. The leader will guide participants to a place that can lower blood pressure, ease fatigue and provide support for inner strength.

Halloween costume parade
The Rec will hold a Halloween Costume Parade on Oct. 10. The parade will begin at 12 p.m. at Veteran’s Park, at Magnolia Boulevard and West Bay Drive. For more information call 431-3890.


Adult exercise classes
The Rec is offering two courses for adults this fall: a yoga/pilates class and a boot camp to be held in the Teen Center (above the Ice Arena) at Magnolia Boulevard on the bay on weekday evenings and weekend mornings. Registration fee for each class is $50 for City of Long Beach residents, $100 for non-Long Beach residents.

Cheerleader program
The Rec is accepting applications for a cheerleader program for children ages 7 to 10. Cheerleaders will practice once a week and meet on Monday evenings for games. Registration is $25.
