Learn special ed systems
The Friedberg JCC in Oceanside, at 15 Neil Court, will host “What Now? Understanding and Navigating the Special Education System” on Nov. 17 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. For information call 634-4192.
Food drive
The Lions Club food drive will be held Nov. 14 and 15 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. at Waldbaum’s on East Park Avenue, C-Town on West Beech Street and Associated on West Park Avenue. The Lions will use the donations to make food baskets and distribute them to families in community for Thanksgiving.
Holiday boutique
Long Beach Catholic Regional School will hold its annual holiday boutique on Nov. 15 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the school gymnasium, at 735 West Broadway. The boutique features hand-crafted items, holiday decorations, jewelry, and unique and interesting gifts, including Polar Bear sweatshirts. Get defensive about driving
The Lido Beach Synagogue Sisterhood is holding a defensive driving course starting at 7 p.m. on Nov. 18. The course coast $54. Pay by check made to Lido Beach Synagogue Sisterhood. Chili contest

Candlelight house tour
The Long Beach Island Landmarks Association will give candlelight house tour starting at the Long Beach Community Center, at 650 Magnolia Boulevard, on Dec. 5 at 2 p.m. For information contact Martha Ross at 431-2140.

Finding forgiveness
What exactly is forgiveness and how do you find it? This program on Nov. 12 at 2:30 p.m. can help you come to terms with blame and guilt, understand the person you are considering forgiving and finding peace. Presenters Debbie Turkel Nardozzi and David Feldman are interfaith ministers.
Food for thought
The Long Beach Art League will hold an exhibit titled "Food, Glorious Food” from Nov. 29 to Jan. 1, 2010. This show will be judged by artist and teacher Ann Bragg, who will critique the works at the league’s general meeting on Dec. 2 at 7:30 p.m.
Fitness for older adults
Exercise physiologist Magda Rosenberg will conduct physical fitness routines for older adults on Fridays at 9 a.m.
Art show
The Long Beach Library’s West End branch, at 810 W. Beech Street, will have an art exhibit featuring the West End Arts group until year’s end. Library hours are Tuesday and Wednesday from 1 to 5 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For information call 432-2704.
Singing Sinatra
Susanne Lo Faso and Vincent Roccaro will perform a variety of duets and solos paying tribute to the music of Bobby Darin, Sinatra and the great ladies of jazz at 2 p.m. on Nov. 15.
Art slide-lecture
Artists have added to the vocabulary of female beauty with the richly colored paintings of the muse — a direct experience for the senses — but at times with hints of scandal and eroticism as an obvious aspect of the experience. This slide-lecture with Louise Cella Caruso will start at 2 p.m. on Nov. 16.
Healing the Chinese way
Tai Chi and dance instructor Marianna Farina will lead you on a journey to peace and calmness at 2 p.m. on Nov. 17 and 24 and Dec. 1 and 8 at 2 p.m.
Book talk
A book group will discuss “Last Night At The Lobste” by Stewart O’Nan. Managing a failed seafood restaurant in a run-down New England mall just before Christmas, Manny coordinates a challenging final shift of mutinous staff while dealing with his love for a waitress, a pregnant girlfriend, and an elusive holiday gift. Latin aerobics
Get fit with challenging low-impact aerobics routines with a Latin flavor. Also get some strength training by bringing 1 to 5 pound weights. Seniors can join instructor Stephanie Durso in her low-impact Latin aerobics class on Monday, Nov. 16 and 30 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
Lisa’s Latin express
Seniors can get fit and have fun with a great workout using Latin dance steps, such as the merengue, cha cha and salsa, with instructor Lisa Wisel on Nov. 19 at 9 a.m.
Music that makes you move
Movement to music is an enjoyable way to exercise and feel better. This action-oriented program, led by instructor Lisa Wisel, is suitable for all seniors. Class sessions are scheduled for Wednesdays at 1 p.m.
Paint and tie-dye workshop
Seniors can enjoy self-expression on a T-shirt, sweatshirt or cloth shopping bag using fabric paint and the tie dying technique. The paint and tie-dye workshop, led by instructor Ron Emanuele, will meet on Nov. 17 and 24 at 1:30 p.m.
Art in your heart club
Seniors are invited to join the Art in Your Heart Club on Thursdays in November from 1 to 3 p.m. Have fun learning or showing off your latest creation. Beginners and experienced artists are welcome.
Seated tai chi
Instructor Judith Weitz invites Long Beach seniors to join her program where seniors will tone and stretch all their muscles without putting stress on their knees, feet, thighs or back. Seated Tai Chi is scheduled on Thursdays starting at 11 a.m.
Sit and get fit
Seniors are invited to improve their health via exercises done sitting or standing next to a chair. Resistance bands, weights and small balls will be used. The sit and get fit program meets on Fridays at 11 a.m.

Adult exercise classes
The Rec is offering two courses for adults this fall: a yoga-pilates class and a boot camp to be held in the Teen Center (above the Ice Arena) at Magnolia Boulevard on the bay on weekday evenings and weekend mornings. Registration fee for each class is $50 for City of Long Beach residents, $100 for non-Long Beach residents.
Turkey trot
The Rec will hold the annual Turkey Trot race on Nov. 22 starting on the boardwalk at Riverside Boulevard. There will be two races: a one mile for elementary through high school children and a 10K (6.2 mile) race. The one-mile race will begin at 9 a.m. and the 10K race at 9:30 a.m. The entrance fee for the one-mile run is $5 per student. The 10K run is $20 for pre-registrants and $25 on the day of the race.
