Celebrate New Year at St. Mary’s
St. Mary of the Isle Parish is hosting a party on New Year’s Eve from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. in their parish hall on East Park Avenue and Monroe Boulevard in Long Beach. Tickets are $30 each and will include dinner, hats, noise makers and champagne toast. There will be a cash bar and music by Pablo Forestier. Give blood
The City of Long Beach will hold its annual blood drive at City Hall from on Jan. 6 from 11:45am and 5:45pm.To schedule an appointment call Cameron Martin at 431-1000 ext. 7216 or stop by the Public Relations office on the fifth floor of City Hall.
Art exhibit
The Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library, at 1125 Broadway in Hewlett, is hosting a special exhibit by the Long Beach Art League until Jan. 28. The opening reception is on Jan. 9 from 2 to 4 p.m.
MLK dinner dance
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Center, at at 615 Riverside Blvd., will hold its annual dinner dance on Jan. 16 at 6 p.m. Tickets are $65 per person or $520 for a table of eight. For more information call 889-6300 or email info@lbmlk.org.

Fitness for older adults
Exercise physiologist Magda Rosenberg will conduct physical fitness routines for older adults on Fridays at 9 a.m.
Reading with monsters
The Nassau County Library System, Feld Entertainment and the Long Beach Public Library are offering a reading program with many incentives, prizes for readers and one grand prize winner from the county. Children ages 6 to 12 are asked to participate by reading books from a suggested reading list, though it will not be a requirement to read books on the list. The library with the most participants will receive a monster truck and driver visit on Jan. 28. The program is anticipated to run from now until Jan. 18. Signup has started in the youth services department at Long Beach Library.
Art show
The Long Beach Library’s West End branch, at 810 W. Beech Street, will have an art exhibit featuring the West End Arts group until year’s end. Library hours are Tuesday and Wednesday from 1 to 5 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For information call 432-2704.

Book discussion group
The great books discussion group meets on Jan. 4 to talk about “Runaway” by Alice Munro.
Caregivers get support
The Nassau County Department of Senior Citizen Affairs presents a caregivers support group at 9:30 a.m. on Jan. 6. Share ideas, practical solutions and benefit from peer support. If this is your first meeting, call Nina Karl at 227-8909.
Singing Sinatra
Jerry Cardone celebrates the work and life of a man who has captivated us for decades like no other singer. From a “bluesy” saloon song with a tinkling piano playing a plaintive tune to the jazzy Sinatra with attitude and all that brass, this tribute will lift your spirits and make you want to dance. This concert will be held at 2 p.m. on Dec. 27.
Richard Rodgers jazz
Enjoy an afternoon of the music of Richard Rodgers played by the Paul Joseph Quartet at 2 p.m. on Jan. 3. Hear renditions of “If I Loved You,” “Bewitched,” “My Funny Valentine,” and many others. Paul Joseph has performed original solo piano concerts throughout Long Island and received wide acclaim. His quartet includes Mike Corn on drums, Jimi Durso on bass and Susan Mitchell on violin.
Tunes from the east side
With Ismael Butera on the accordion, David Hofstra on the stand-up bass and Deborah Karpel’s vocals, the East Side Trio will bring the audience back to a bygone era with their unique interpretations of popular songs of the 20th Century. Their repertoire includes great American jazz standards and popular songs of the 1950s and ‘60s. This concert starts at 2 p.m. on Jan. 10.
Communications course

Line dancing with Lori
Exercise your mind and your body by attending Line Dancing With Lori, led by popular instructor Lori Shapiro on Dec. 28.
Opt art class
Join Marilyn Kestin on Jan. 12, 19 and 26 at 9:30 a.m. to learn about optical art and three-dimensional drawing. Make drawings that will look as though they would pop right off the page. Registration is required. For information call 431-3510.
Broadway jazz dance
Seniors are invited to learn dance routines choreographed to popular show tunes by professional dance instructor Laura Murphy on Thursdays, Jan. 7, 14 and 12 from 10 a.m.
Latin aerobics
Seniors can join instructor Stephanie Durso in her Low-Impact Latin Aerobics class on Monday, Jan. 11 an 25 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
Senior art reception
On January 27 at 10:30 a.m. there will be an senior art exhibit showcasing the work of the Magnolia Senior Center’s budding and experienced artists who participated in West End Art’s Art à la Carte Program. During this program, West End Arts members shared their art expertise with the center’s seniors.

Music that makes you move
Movement to music is an enjoyable way to exercise and feel better. This action-oriented program, led by instructor Lisa Wisel, is suitable for all seniors. Class sessions are scheduled for Wednesdays at 1 p.m.
Art in your heart
Seniors are invited to join the Art in Your Heart Club on Thursdays from 1 to 3 p.m. Have fun learning or showing off your latest creation. Beginners and experienced artists are welcome.
Seated tai chi
Instructor Judith Weitz invites Long Beach seniors to join her program where seniors will tone and stretch all their muscles without putting stress on their knees, feet, thighs or back. Seated Tai Chi is scheduled on Thursdays starting at 11 a.m.
Sit and get fit
Seniors are invited to improve their health via exercises done sitting or standing next to a chair. Resistance bands, weights and small balls will be used. The sit and get fit program meets on Fridays at 11 a.m.

Hot off the presses is the Senior Friendly Establishments List for 2010 prepared by the Long Beach Advisory Board for Seniors.It includes close to 40 local businesses that offer discounts to seniors.
