Special Events  -
Bird walk
The South Shore Audubon Society will host a bird walk from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Jan. 24 in the Town of Hempstead Park in Point Lookout. The walk is free but will be canceled if there is rain, snow or a temperature below 25 degrees. The group will meet in the southeast corner of the park’s parking lot. Bring binoculars. Neighborhood watch meeting
West End residents interested in learning about the Neighborhood Watch Program are invited to an informational meeting at 7p.m. on Jan. 27 at the West End Community Center on Maryland Avenue.
Youth group forming
On Jan. 31 and every Sunday following, St. Mary’s Church in Long Beach will host a Catholic Youth Group and open its doors to the youth of the Long Beach community for a weekly get together after the 6:30 p.m. Mass. For information call Mary Ann Specht at 432-0157 ext. 15. 
Art exhibit
The Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library, at 1125 Broadway in Hewlett, is hosting a special exhibit by the Long Beach Art League until Jan. 28.
Little League registration
Registration for the Long Beach-Lido Little League 2010 season is open now through Jan. 31. To register for baseball or softball go to: www.beachlittleleague.org and click the “register now” link in the middle of the page. Baseball players born on May 1, 1997 through April 30, 2005 are eligible. Softball players from kindergarten through 8th grade are eligible. Managers and coaches must register as well at no additional charge.
Go have a blast
The Long Beach Chamber of Commerce will host a Winter Blast party at Minnesota's, at 959 W. Beech St., on Feb. 4 at 7p.m. Tickets are $49 per person and includes open bar, buffet and live music. For information call Warren Vegh at 448-2959. 
Torah classes
Temple Beth-El, at 570 W. Walnut St. in Long Beach, is offering free Torah classes on Sundays at 10:30 a.m. in the smorgashbord room. For information call 432-1678.
Trump trip

Social networking not just for kids
Facebook provides great networking opportunities and a way to connect with old friends and family. In this class you will learn how to create an account and control the network’s most popular functions on Tuesdays Jan. 19 and 26 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. You must have an existing e-mail account to take this course. It is highly recommended that you bring a digital camera or a digital photo of yourself to this class. To register call Edie at 432-7201 starting on Jan. 12 after 1 p.m.
Playing with your mental health
The Mental Health Players is an improvisational theatre troupe of volunteers who perform vignettes addressing real life issues. The vignettes focus on many concerns facing seniors such as transition times and mental health in general. Audience participation is encouraged at this production at 2 p.m. on Jan. 19.
Meditation classes
Lisa Wisel will teach techniques that facilitate renewed energy by focusing on the breath and body sensation, along with easy stretches on Wednesdays Jan. 20 and Feb. 10 at 2:15 p.m.
Resilience and wellnesss
Are you facing personal struggles or business challenges in the  New Year? This two hour, interactive workshop will provide ways to reframe stressors and adversities using healthy coping mechanisms at 2 p.m. on Jan. 23. Dr. Valerie Conlan, a health educator and wellness consultant, will help plot your personal plan for achievement and happiness in 2010.
Four saxy guys
Experience the splendor and whimsy of four saxophones of diverse musical styles-- including ragtime, baroque, jazz, modern, and even the Beatles -- at 2 p.m. on Jan. 24.
President Obama’s scorecard Barack Obama was elected, to a great extent, because he set himself as the representative of change.  He inherited an economy in trouble, two wars, and a political system beset by major problems. Howard Shurdut, who has been lecturing on current events for over ten years, will lead a discussion Obama’s first year in office at 2:30 p.m. on Feb. 4.
Communications course
Nassau Community College will offer a course on interpersonal communication at the library on Mondays from 5:30 to 8 p.m. starting on Feb. 1. A course description can be accessed at www.ncc.edu by clicking the MyNCCTab at the top, and then clicking the link to "class schedule." 
Fitness for older adults
Exercise physiologist Magda Rosenberg will conduct physical fitness routines for older adults on Fridays at 9 a.m.

Opt art class
Join Marilyn Kestin on Jan. 19 and 26 at 9:30 a.m. to learn about optical art and three-dimensional drawing. Make drawings that look as though they would pop right off the page. Registration is required. For information call 431-3510.
Broadway jazz dance
Seniors are invited to learn dance routines choreographed to popular show tunes by professional dance instructor Laura Murphy on Thursdays Jan. 21 at 10 a.m.
Latin aerobics
Seniors can join instructor Stephanie Durso in her low-impact Latin aerobics class on Jan. 25 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
Senior art reception
On Jan. 27 at 10:30 a.m. there will be an senior art exhibit showcasing the work of the Magnolia Senior Center’s budding and experienced artists who participated in West End Art’s Art à la Carte Program. During this program, West End Arts members shared their art expertise with the center’s seniors.

Music that makes you move
Movement to music is an enjoyable way to exercise and feel better. This action-oriented program, led by instructor Lisa Wisel, is suitable for all seniors. Class sessions are scheduled for Wednesdays at 1 p.m.
Seated tai chi
Instructor Judith Weitz invites Long Beach seniors to join her program where they will learn to tone and stretch all their muscles without putting stress on their knees, feet, thighs or back. Seated Tai Chi is scheduled on Thursdays starting at 11 a.m.
Sit and get fit
Seniors are invited to improve their health through exercises done sitting or standing next to a chair. Resistance bands, weights and small balls will be used. The sit-and-get-fit program meets on Fridays at 11 a.m.

Start saving money now! Hot off the presses is the Senior Friendly Establishments List for 2010, prepared by the Long Beach Advisory Board for Seniors.It includes close to 40 local businesses that offer discounts to seniors. Pick up a copy at the 2nd floor main office at the senior center.
