Special Events 

Shoring up the shore
Eagle Scout candidate John McQuade of Long Beach has organized a “shore up our shore” project with the cooperation of the Town of Hempstead Department of Conservation and Waterways. McQuade of Troop 332 will supervise the planting of 50,000 beach grass unit on the Point Lookout dunes of the barrier beaches oceanfront.Volunteers are welcome to help starting at 10 a.m. at the Town Beach at Point Lookout on Dec. 6.

Horse and carriage ride
The Long Beach Island Landmarks Association will host a horse and carriage ride through the historic red brick district starting at 151 W. Penn St. at 5 p.m. on Dec. 6. For information call Martha Ross at 431-2140.

Holiday shopping

Temple Israel Sisterhood is hosting a one-stop shopping event with makeup demonstrations, Partylite candles and Lia Sophia jewelry. Jewelers will also be collecting unwanted gold for cash. Dec. 8 at 7:30 p.m. 305 Riverside Blvd.

Stache bash
The Long Island Chapter of Mustaches For Kids will hold a “Stache Bash” at the Tiki Bar, at 832 W. Beech Street in Long Beach, from 5 to 9 p.m. on Dec. 12. This is the chapter’s end of the season gala and a main fundraiser in which awards are given for mustaches of distinction. For information contact Billy at billykup@gmail.com.  

Christmas party
Catholic Daughters of The America's in Long Beach will have a Christmas party at the Fisherman’s Catch restaurant on Bayside Drive in Point Lookout from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Dec. 13. There will be a DJ, dancing and raffles. Price is $50 per person or $90 for two. For information call Carol Giardello at 432-7409. 

Menorah lightings
The Bach Jewish Center will hold its annual Kennedy Plaza menorah lighting at 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 14.

Fitness for older adults
Exercise physiologist Magda Rosenberg will conduct physical fitness routines for older adults on Fridays at 9 a.m.

Art show
The Long Beach Library’s West End branch, at 810 W. Beech Street, will have an art exhibit featuring the West End Arts group until year’s end. Library hours are Tuesday and Wednesday from 1 to 5 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For information call 432-2704.

Hearing screenings
Adelphi University’s community outreach program consists of free hearing screenings for adults and children of all ages from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Dec. 4.

Resources for singles
In this busy and hectic world, singles find that earning a living and tending to career and personal responsibilities drains them of the energy required to find fulfillment. Learn about the myriad opportunities available to single people in this discussion, sharing and question-and-answer segments, led by Constance Hallinan Logan at 2 p.m. on Dec. 5.

Borscht Belt to Broadway
Few performers have the right combination of rhythm, voice and comedic timing to pull off this type of show flawlessly. Warren Schein combines a fantastic collection from the Great American Songbook, Broadway musicals and comedic routines from the heyday of the Catskill hotel circuit. His program is a 2 p.m. on Dec. 6.

Book discussion group
The great books discussion group meets on Mondays at 2:30 p.m.:Dec. 7: “How Fiction Works” by James Wood; Dec. 21: “Selected Short Stories” by Maxim Gorky; Jan. 4: “Runaway” by Alice Munro.

Healing the Chinese way
Tai Chi and dance instructor Marianna Farina will lead you on a journey to peace and calmness at 2 p.m. on Dec. 8 at 2 p.m.

Meditation lessons
Lisa Wisel will teach techniques that facilitate renewed energy by focusing on the breath and body sensation, along with easy stretches on Dec. 9 at 2:15 p.m.

So you think you can dance?
Lisa Wisel, a dance-movement therapist, will create an easy, fun experience that does not require any specific dance technique — at 6 p.m. on Dec. 9.

Rethink retirement
Faced with the possibility of a retirement that may last 20 years or longer, you may have a lot to live for, but will you have enough money? Does your current investment strategy support your lifetime income needs? If you’re rethinking your retirement, this seminar with speaker Simeon Thallis is for you. It starts at 8 p.m. on Dec. 9.

Finding joy
Budgets are tight, bills are high. Days are short, it’s cold and the sky is winter gray. What better time for finding joy? Debbie T. Nardozzi and David E. Feldman will show you how to “take the Oy out of Joy” at this multimedia workshop at 2:30 p.m. on Dec. 10.

Help kids cope with stress
As we approach the holiday season, there are changes in routine, traveling from place to place and gathering with family and friends. These events can be especially stressful for everyone involved. Facilitator Erika Stroh, of the Human Connections Institute, will share some tips for creating a more peaceful family holiday at 8 p.m. on Dec. 10.

Holiday celebration
Circulo de la Hispanidad wishes the community a happy holiday season and invites them to music and dance performances at 1 p.m. on Dec. 12.

Communications course

League party
The Long Beach League of Women will hold a holiday party at the senior center at 7 p.m. on Dec. 14. People who are interested in becoming a member in the league are invited and have to bring a dish to pass and non-perishable food for the less fortunate.

Music that makes you move
Movement to music is an enjoyable way to exercise and feel better. This action-oriented program, led by instructor Lisa Wisel, is suitable for all seniors. Class sessions are scheduled for Wednesdays at 1 p.m.

Art in your heart
Seniors are invited to join the Art in Your Heart Club on Thursdays in November from 1 to 3 p.m. Have fun learning or showing off your latest creation. Beginners and experienced artists are welcome.

Seated tai chi
Instructor Judith Weitz invites Long Beach seniors to join her program where seniors will tone and stretch all their muscles without putting stress on their knees, feet, thighs or back. Seated Tai Chi is scheduled on Thursdays starting at 11 a.m.

Sit and get fit
Seniors are invited to improve their health via exercises done sitting or standing next to a chair. Resistance bands, weights and small balls will be used. The sit and get fit program meets on Fridays at 11 a.m.  

Get strong and stretched
Gain strength, flexibility and balance through a series of resistance exercises in this challenging program. Bring weights, a yoga mat and resistance band on Tuesdays Dec. 8 and 15 at 1 p.m.

Take better digital photos
Do you have a digital camera and would like to learn how to use it? Professional photographer Scott Evers will conduct the workshops on Wednesdays, Dec. 9 at 1p.m.

Santa is coming to town
The Rec will host its Annual Children’s Holiday Party on Dec. 12 at the Teen Center, above the Ice Arena, at Magnolia Boulevard and West Bay Drive, from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. This year‘s party will feature a visit from Santa Claus, holiday arts and crafts and a movie. There is a $5 fee per child to help support the Christmas Angel Fund, which supports children in the Long Beach School District. For information call 431-3890.
