Thursday was dig-out day throughout the South Shore after a near-blizzard smacked the area from late Tuesday through early Thursday morning. Almost a foot and a half of heavy, wet snow pressed down on roofs, cars, streets and parks, closing schools for most students and bringing shoveling chores to most adults. Nassau County Police Commissioner Lawrence W. Mulvey has announced that for the thirty one hour period from 12:01 a.m. Feb. 10, through 7 a.m. Feb. 11, there were 190 auto accidents in the Nassau County. Of those, 34 resulted in injuries. more
Nassau County’s latest gun buy back program, held at Shiloh Baptist Church on N. Centre Avenue last Saturday morning, got 173 illegal operable guns off the street. The five buy back events in different Nassau County communities have so far collected over 1,470 weapons. Law enforcement pays $200 for each gun, and $14,600 has been distributed to date — money that has been seized from criminals. more

The co-op board of the Hartley House at 75 Maine Ave. has settled with Mary Pasko, a 92-year-old widow with medical disabilities allowing her to keep her dog, a 14-year-old miniature poodle, who serves as her assistance animal. The case had gained intense media attention when the board attempted to evict Pasko after she refused to part with her dog, or to move. more
