New Police Commissioner Charles Gennario officially took the reins of the Police Department at the village board meeting on Monday when he was sworn in by Mayor Mary Bossart. Immediately afterward, Gennario promoted five officers and swore in three new ones.

To the surprise of both village and school officials, a work crew has installed a gate and several new posts, presumably for a second gate, between the South Side High School campus and Fireman’s Field, adjacent to the school. The work on the gate at the main entrance to the field, which began on Dec. 30, was completed last weekend.

Educators say literacy begins on the day you are born. With the objective to provide books to new mothers, as well as to expand the library in the Pediatric Division of South Nassau Communities Hospital, three eighth grade students at South Side MIddle School and Assistant Principal Rosemarie Cammarata held a book drive at the school. Each morning, they collected baby and children’s books.

On Feb. 13, 1973, when, as Jack McKeon would say, “the Dead Sea was just sick,” he was sworn in as an officer in the Rockville Centre Police Department. This New Year’s Eve, almost 37 years later, McKeon was set to retire after 19 years as commissioner — the longest tenure ever for a head of the RVCPD.
