In RVC, it's green light, red light — click

Drivers who blow through a red light at the intersection of Lakeview Avenue and Peninsula Boulevard will soon be getting an unpleasant surprise in the mail — a traffic ticket.

Crews were on hand to install red light cameras — Rockville Centre’s first— at the intersection of the two roads on Feb. 23. The move comes shortly after the county completed a project to upgrade traffic signals along the entire length of Peninsula Boulevard. The corner at the western edge of Rockville Centre joins a growing number of intersections included in Nassau County’s program to catch motorists who don’t stop after the lights turn red.

Because a portion of the intersection is located within Rockville Centre, and the easternmost camera is powered with village electricity, the Board of Trustees requested that the county complete work on a left turn signal at the intersection as a condition for its approval.

Tickets, along with a photo from the cameras, will be sent to owners of cars that run the red light. Nassau County will collect the $50 fine; the village sees none of the revenue.
