Peter and the Wolf

Outdoor family concert to feature South Shore Symphony

Posted

Rockville Centre's South Shore Symphony musicians will take the spotlight on Oct. 4 as actor Matt Gallant appears with the 65-member orchestra under the baton of its music director, Scott Jackson Wiley, in a performance of "Peter and the Wolf," the beloved Prokofiev work that introduces young audiences to the instruments of the orchestra.

The concert, on the lawns of the Nassau County Museum of Art's lush 145-acre property in Roslyn Harbor, is from 1 to 2 pm. The rain date is Oct. 18 at 2 p.m.

The symphony is a cherished South Shore institution that was first organized in 1983. Under Wiley’s leadership, the orchestra has grown to include professional musicians and gifted high schoolers in addition to dedicated amateur players. The orchestra has regularly performed in the Cathedral of St. Agnes, Rockville Centre’s Centennial Park and last summer at the Lakeside Theater, Eisenhower Park. Each year the symphony collaborates with Leggz Ltd. Dance in a popular full-length production of Tchaikovsky’s "Nutcracker Suite."

Matt Gallant is the personable, well-known host of the Animal Planet’s Funniest Animals and ABC’s hit reality show, “American Inventor.” A gifted sculptor, Gallant is noted for his charitable commitments, particularly his association with the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
