One of the greatest benefits of living on Long Island is its close proximity to New York City. One could argue that we’re also fortunate to have one of the best forms of public transportation, the Long Island Rail Road. Sometimes, however, this gift becomes a curse. Just ask the estimated 300,000 people who board a train every day on the country’s largest railroad system.

Two teenagers were robbed in Valley Stream’s west end last Friday night. According to Nassau County Police, two females teens, ages 14 and 16, were walking on West Merrick Road near Clear Stream Avenue at 8:30 p.m. when they were approached by a unknown man.

Updated: 5:15 p.m., Sept. 9, 2011: An eastbound Long Island Rail Road train struck and killed a New Jersey man at the Merrick train station just before 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, according to LIRR spokesman Aaron Donovan. Metropolitan Transportation Authority and Nassau County police were on hand to investigate with LIRR officials.
