The Hewlett-Woodmere Board of Education adopted a $109.6 million budget on April 24. The spending plan includes the eighth-grade Discovery lunchtime lab program as well as highly attended Community Education courses such as yoga, exercise and Mommy & Me that students and community residents wanted reinstated.

Hewlett-Woodmere public schools announced at its Feb. 27 Board of Education meeting the appointment of three new principals; Al Bauer, the current assistant principal at Hewlett High School, will become the principal at Woodmere Middle School, Franklin Early Childhood Center’s new principal will be Lorraine Smyth, the current assistant principal at Hewlett Elementary, and Evelyn Lolis will be the new principal at Hewlett Elementary School.

Arrests
HEWLETT – Yakini M. Brown, 35, of Brooklyn, was arrested for shoplifting at a department store on Broadway at noon on Aug., 17, police said.
INWOOD – Odirr E. Torres-Nolasco, 25, of Far Rockaway, was arrested for driving while intoxicated on Morris Avenue at 8:40 p.m. on Aug. 17, according to police.

Hewlett resident Jay Greenbaum participated in the Ironman U.S. Championship in Manhattan on Aug. 11 and completed the 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and 26.2-mile marathon in 14 hours, 37 minutes and 37 seconds.
