District 24 teaches great Black figures for BHM

Posted

In celebration of Black History Month, Valley Stream District 24 students took part in classroom activities to understand and recognize the accomplishments of prominent black figures both past and present.

In Brooklyn Avenue Elementary School, students learned about Mae Jemison, the first African American woman to travel into space when she served as a NASA mission specialist aboard the space shuttle Endeavor in 1992. Students worked together to design their own rockets in different ways by using air propulsion technology and then competed to see whose rocket could achieve the greatest distance and speed.

At the Robert W. Carbonaro Elementary School, students created a collaborative biographical quilt highlighting incredible Black figures who were leaders in their respective fields ranging from education, science, and government to arts and sports. They shared aloud information about their chosen person’s life and accomplishment.

In William L. Buck, students kicked off Black History Month by co-hosting the morning announcements to highlight Unsung Heroes: Black changemakers who left a lasting contribution on the country.
