School just opened. SATs are being given, Advanced Placement courses have started. Pressure on the students to excel increases more each year. Those who excel seem on the road to success if they can afford higher education and the huge debt it generates. more

I was dismayed by Joseph B. Margolin’s letter in the Sept. 15-21 Herald, “What about Hewlett-Woodmere?” criticizing Mayor Ed Fare’s new Mayor for the Day contest. Mr. Margolin asserts that Mayor Fare excluded children who live in Valley Stream and attend District 14 schools. more
Some of the comments made by a couple of people in the Herald article “The eyesore of Gibson” (April 27-May 3), I believe, were misdirected. Dr. Leonard M. Bleicher, a want-to-be Gibson real estate tycoon, deliberately destroyed the very stores he purchased. more

I am a resident of the Gibson area in Valley Stream that the Federal Emergency Management Agency mandated flood insurance. I do believe that we have had that 100-year storm that FEMA officials contend would flood out our area of Valley Stream. more
On Wednesday, Aug. 24, someone went into my backyard screened-in porch and stole my grandson’s bicycle and his helmet. more
As I am certain you recall, numerous meeting, calls, symposiums and discussions were held between our federal and village officials with regard to the implemented FEMA flood maps and their impact on the Village of Valley Stream. Although it was only anecdotal, many residents made a strong case that in all their time in the village, they never had a flood — even in major storms. more
