School just opened. SATs are being given, Advanced Placement courses have started. Pressure on the students to excel increases more each year. Those who excel seem on the road to success if they can afford higher education and the huge debt it generates.

Last week a letter written by Peter Panzarino appeared in the Herald (“A case of sour grapes”). Mr. Panzarino made several accusations which require rebuttal. First of all, I did lose the mayoral election this past March.

I was dismayed by Joseph B. Margolin’s letter in the Sept. 15-21 Herald, “What about Hewlett-Woodmere?” criticizing Mayor Ed Fare’s new Mayor for the Day contest. Mr. Margolin asserts that Mayor Fare excluded children who live in Valley Stream and attend District 14 schools.

Some of the comments made by a couple of people in the Herald article “The eyesore of Gibson” (April 27-May 3), I believe, were misdirected. Dr. Leonard M. Bleicher, a want-to-be Gibson real estate tycoon, deliberately destroyed the very stores he purchased.

I have recently had the opportunity to read two items with messages from Mayor Ed Fare of the incorporated Village of Valley Stream. The items are the 2011-12 Valley Stream Almanac and Newcomer’s Guide and The Village Green, the official newsletter of the village.

I am a resident of the Gibson area in Valley Stream that the Federal Emergency Management Agency mandated flood insurance. I do believe that we have had that 100-year storm that FEMA officials contend would flood out our area of Valley Stream.

On Wednesday, Aug. 24, someone went into my backyard screened-in porch and stole my grandson’s bicycle and his helmet.

As I am certain you recall, numerous meeting, calls, symposiums and discussions were held between our federal and village officials with regard to the implemented FEMA flood maps and their impact on the Village of Valley Stream. Although it was only anecdotal, many residents made a strong case that in all their time in the village, they never had a flood — even in major storms.
