Thankfully, Irene has passed through Valley Stream, hopefully without too much damage and devastation. One thing that did not happen is that there was no flooding in Gibson, where the new flood maps were effective in September 2009. Gibson Boulevard did not even have a puddle, much less a storm surge going to 11 feet, 4 inches. more
For the last two years, the residents of Gibson have been told by the Federal Emergency Management Agency that their scientific conclusions based upon a study focusing on the east end of Long Island, and their historical information (which they have not disclosed) clearly indicated that a hurricane making landfall on Long Island would create a “surge” of historic proportions. more
I have lived in Valley Stream for 30 years and it breaks my heart to know that Central Hardware is in dire straits. This store has been an institution in Valley Stream for more than 70 years, and like many other “mom and pop” businesses, has fallen victim to the big-box stores. Why do we prefer to drive to a mall? We waste gas and time looking for a parking spot, only to walk around aimlessly trying to find what we need and then wait on a long line to pay for our purchases. more

As for dumping Jim Darcy (“Time to retire Murray and dump Darcy,” July 7-13), many of us would yell a resounding “no.” Ever since he started in public life, Mr. Darcy has done so much for his (and our) Valley Stream. more
Judging by the number of homes in Gibson and the south side of Valley Stream with their garbage on the curb on July 5, I was not the only one unaware that there was no pickup on July 5, the day after the holiday. more
As the first anniversary of my husband’s passing nears, I find great comfort in the incredible kindness and generosity of spirit that is extended to me again and again in memory of Eddie. I thank the Valley Stream community and its literally thousands of residents who continue to lift my spirits by sharing their personal memories of Eddie. more

I would like to take this opportunity to thank and compliment Assemblyman Brian Curran for holding the Valley Stream Town Hall meeting on May 19. I would also like to thank Valley Stream Mayor Ed Fare and Town Councilman Jim Darcy for co- hosting the meeting. more
On May 19, I and some other residents of Valley Stream attended a meeting at the Valley Stream Village Hall called and conducted by Assemblyman Brian Curran. The meeting was billed to be an update on problems raised two years ago by the implementation of new flood maps by the Federal Emergency Management Agency that have adversely impacted arts of Valley Stream, notably Gibson, including significant parts of School District 14. more
