The frigid temperatures and bitter cold in recent weeks have been a major inconvenience in the lives of people all throughout the Northeast, and East Meadow and Salisbury are no exception. While the cumulative snowfall for the Island this winter is far from historic— as of last week, the total snowfall was about 33 inches, compared to 68 the year before — it’s been the wind chill and icy roads and walkways that have brought about the most frustration. more

The Town of Hempstead crowned nine winners of its 2014 Recycle Poster contest on Monday at Levy Park in Merrick. Two of the winners were elementary school students in the East Meadow School District. more

On. Aug. 18, Anabelle Ciampi, 10, a fifth grader at Parkway Elementary School, completed the Deep Pond Junior Triathlon in Wading River for the second straight year. She ran in memory of her uncle, Brian Ciampi, who died on Feb. 22 after losing his battle with colon cancer.

‘Tri-ing for Uncle Brian’

Anabelle Ciampi is 10, and in August, she completed her second junior triathlon — a race comprising a 100-meter swim, 2-mile bike ride and a 1.3-mile run. Anabelle, a fifth grader at Parkway Elementary School, is an avid swimmer, and is as athletic they come. But she doesn’t do the triathlons for exercise. Rather, she does it for her uncle, Brian Ciampi, who lost his battle with colon cancer last February at the age of 39. more
